Welcome to my web site. If you have decided to see a counselor or to practice yoga, then you are already on your way to a more settled and satisfying life. This page may help you to decide whether my counseling practice is right for you.

I am a Licensed Psychologist with 25 years’ of experience counseling individuals, couples and groups. For more information on my education and training, office location, office hours, and contact information, see about me.

Individual Counseling

I strive to provide a warm, active approach to counseling. I validate clients’ concerns, help them to recognize and trust their strengths, and guide them toward actions that relieve distress and improve life.

I regularly counsel individual patients with the following concerns:

Anxiety Depression
Relationship Concerns Trauma
Career change Grief and Loss
Health and Wellness Infertility/Miscarriage
Perimenopausal Change Life Changes and Transitions
Stress Management

I am trained as a Level 2 therapist in EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is one of the most helpful treatments for resolving trauma stemming from injury, abuse, and physical violence; and for solidifying clients’ internal resources.

Couples Counseling

Many couples seek couples counseling only when their relationship is in trouble. We now know, however, that couples can learn skills that can strengthen their relationship. Whether you are in a new relationship, an old and successful relationship, or a troubled relationship, couples counseling can enhance the quality of your life.

There has been a revolution in recent years in couples counseling. Dr. Stan Tatkin is a leader in this revolution; he integrated discoveries in neuroscience, interpersonal attachment, and other fields into his Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT). The perspective of PACT is that a couple is a two person psychological system, and that all couples and partners can learn to develop and maintain a trusting, secure relationship.

I am a Level III Candidate  in the practice of PACT, and I hope to complete my certification in 2017.

New Client Information and Forms

Your first step will be to call me (970.491.9689) or email me (beth@bethobrienphd.com) with your name and phone number so that we can talk and jointly decide whether I am a good fit for your needs.

After we have talked by phone and set up our first appointment, please download and fill out the relevant form(s). These are fillable pdf forms that you can print and bring to the first session.

For more information about these forms, see my forms page.

Fees

My standard charge is $150 per clinical hour (typically 60 minutes of face-to-face time). If your health insurance includes mental health services, refer to the Using Your Insurance section below for more information.

Payment es expected at the end of each session. You can pay with cash, check or credit card. Cash or check is preferred for copayments.

Cancellation Policy

Psychotherapists—unlike many other health practitioners—schedule a single client, or a couple, for an hour or longer. When a client fails to show up for an appointment or gives short notice of cancellation, it is usually not possible for me to fill in with another client. It is necessary, therefore, for me to charge $75  for no shows and cancellations on less than two business days notice (48 hours). I make exceptions for illness or family emergencies. Please advise me as soon as possible by email (beth@bethobrienphd.com) or phone or text (970.491.9689).

Using Your Insurance

I am an in-network provider for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. If you have insurance for which I am not an in-network provider, then you pay me the full fee, I provide you with a receipt, and you file a claim for reimbursement from your insurer.
